It would have been easier for me to shape the cake as Thomas and be done with it at once, but the parents declined the idea since they were afraid that little Alex could refuse to cut the cake (he loves Thomas that much). I went with the plan B – to make the train from the gum paste as a cake topper for the boy to keep his favorite character. Although, Thomas is 100% edible.
Inside is a chocolate cake, soaked with rum syrup, and filled with dulce de leche buttercream.
For those who is interested, I’ve put together a detailed The Thomas the Tank Engine figure tutorial.

Hi Vera,
I too admire your work and also have a question as previous responder, is it possible to order a cake from you?

Vera your work is stunning and sounds delicious. Is it possible to order a cake from you?

What is the measurement on the Thomas the Train? And can you make Percy and James also? I’m interested in all three and what would be the cost and time frame once you recieve payment? Thank you.
November 2, 2012 at 10:28 am
Rebecca, the size of the figure is roughly 5″ by 2.5″. The height is about 3.5″. The exact measurements are in the tutorial, but you can increase or decrease it proportionally to your desire.
Unfortunately, I don’t have tutorials for Percy or James, nor I am planning to do it in the near future.

Wonderful site and cake! I’m blowned away. You said it would have been easier to carve the cake directly instead of creating the topper. Can you explain how you would have carved it, I tried and wa snot able to make a decent Thomas, so I will try your option 2 instead: your tutorial for the train topper.

Shopping around for someone to make a Thomas cake for my son’s 4th birthday in June. This is my favorite-looking Thomas cake. Can you make it? I’m in Palmdale, CA (1 hour North of Los Angeles)? Are you for hire? :) Great job!
